Stylists Say This Is A Must-Buy Product To Give Fine Hair More Volume

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

Fine hair may be quick to dry and easier to manage (read: less frizz and fewer tangles), but anyone blessed with this hair type also knows the other side of the coin. Even with the best curling irons or hair dryer brushes at your disposal, fine hair often has trouble holding a style, which can make it look limp and lifeless. Enter the texturizing spray. It can help add volume, definition, and provide the grip thin strands needs to maintain a style, whether curls or an updo for a special occasion.

Because fine hair also happens to be prone to greasiness, stylists we spoke with say it's important to find a product that is dry, lightweight, and can even help absorb some of that excess oil. A quick cheat is to keep an eye out for buzzwords like "light" or "dry." Experts also recommend searching for ingredients known as silica-based compounds, which help plump the hair by gradually strengthening it and helping prevent breakage (more on that later).

Best texture sprays for fine hair What to consider Type

When shopping, be sure to pick a texturizing spray that’s specifically formulated for fine hair. These products are generally considered lightweight and dry. "The spray should leave hair feeling soft and flexible rather than crunchy or sticky," says Natalie Lamorena, celebrity stylist and owner of Polished Pub Hair and Nail Bar in Park Ridge, New Jersey. Since fine hair is easily weighed down, you should try to steer clear of products containing heavy oils or silicones. These can make fine hair feel limp and greasy, Lamorena says. For best results, stylists recommend an aerosol formula, since they're better equipped to evenly deliver a light mist.

Ingredients

Look for texturizing sprays with silica-based compounds, including dimethicone or cyclomethicone, says Mandy Pulse, stylist and salon owner of Salon Inspire in Kansas City, Missouri. "These ingredients will extend the life of your desired look by absorbing oils and adding grip to the hair, creating a fuller, more voluminous appearance," she says. Additional ingredients to look for include mineral zeolite, which provides a rough, matte finish that adds the volume fine hair needs. Lightweight hydrating ingredients, like aloe vera and glycerin, are also helpful, since fine hair can become dry with too much texturizing product, Lamorena says.

How we chose

To find the best texturizing spray for fine hair, I consulted four professional hair stylists to find out what to look for (and what to avoid), plus tapped our team of beauty experts for their tried-and-true favorites. I then evaluated each texturizing spray based on its ingredients and efficacy.

Full Dry Volume and Texture Spray

After considering over 10 sprays, our fine-haired editors gave Living Proof the top spot for its ability to add next-level volume to hair even well into the next day without making it crunchy. We also weren't surprised when Lamorena recommended the brand's texturizing spray for its superior volume-boosting abilities. "This spray uses a patented molecule that adds instant lift and fullness," she says. "It provides weightless texture, making it great for fine or limp hair."

Users say you don't need much to get the results you're after, either. A little goes a long way to amp up limp and lifeless hair. We also love that it doubles as a heat protectant up to 410 degrees Fahrenheit, too. One of our testers also raved that the spray had a great scent, though other opinions were varying.

"It's great for all hair types, [and those who want] to fluff up the hair and add weightless volume," she says. The product is powered by microfibers that make hair appear fuller and denser without leaving any crunchy residue in its wake.

Ulta Dry Texture Finishing Spray

If your fine hair happens to be oil-prone, Pulse points to Redken's Dry Texture Finishing Spray. "With ingredients like silica, hydrolyzed wheat protein (a protein that strengthens the hair and helps build body without weighing it down, contributing to a thicker appearance), and zeolite, the spray is made with a unique blend of ingredients that work together to provide lift, texture, and long-lasting volume without making the hair feel heavy or sticky," Pulse says.

Users say it really does deliver impressive density, even on the finest hair (one user even tested it during a Southern summer). They are, however, divided on the scent—some love it, while others can't stand it.

Ulta Signature Dry Texturizing Spray

If your roots look limp and lifeless, you have to try this dry shampoo/texturizing spray hybrid, says Lamorena. The lightweight and invisible formula is both volumizing and texturizing, but also works to absorb any excess oil on the scalp and strands. The result: Lifted roots and a more lush-looking style.

We love that it has some hydrating properties, too, so hair won't become dull and prone to breakage. The formula also includes mango and aloe extracts for this purpose, plus Oribe's signature complex, which adds a nice bonus of UV protection. It's definitely a splurge, but the volume and boost of hydration it adds is worth the price.

Sephora Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray

For maximum versatility, Lamorena suggests this spray from Amika, which she calls highly-buildable. Add just a touch of tousle for everyday wear, or layer it on for intense volume on the days you need it most. "It has a matte finish, perfect for creating fullness and definition in fine hair," says Lamorena. "It’s lightweight and doesn’t leave any sticky residue, either."

Like most of Amika's hair products, we like that this spray is budget-friendly, but highly-effective. We also love the scent and the fact that it comes in a travel-sized can that meets TSA requirements for frequent fliers, too.

Sephora Dry Texture Spray

Texturizing spray has a tendency to dry out strands, and even fine hair needs a little bit of moisture. For those with damaged or brittle hair, we recommend Moroccanoil's iteration. It's infused with argan oil to improve elasticity and smooth hair. Unlike other options, the spray doesn't make it hard to comb through your hair afterwards.

Still, it contains ingredients, like zeolite and hydrolyzed wheat protein, to lend grip and add texture. Users say it's a great all-in-one product, offering both volume and hold. And, as a nice bonus, we love the way it smells, too.

"It's not a heavy formula, so it won't weigh your hair down at all and features a flexible hold."

Users say the results are long-lasting—your style will be at its prime all day long. And we love that the product has a cleaner ingredient list, free from any harsh products like parabens.

The 7 Best Shampoos For Fine Hair (Plus, Some Pro Tips For Washing Your Hair To Maximize Volume)

If you have super soft, slippery hair that doesn’t have much volume to it, you likely have fine hair. And if you have fine hair, you know how important it is to find the right products that won’t weigh it down, starting with shampoo.

I’ll take you through the best formulas for fine hair shortly, but before I do, there’s something I need to clarify up top: Fine hair is different from thin hair. Though the two terms are often used interchangeably, they’re not the same. Fine hair refers to thickness of each individual strand, while thin hair is related to the density or how many strands you have on your head. Knowing this distinction can help narrow down your choices when shopping for products. OK, now that I’ve cleared that up, allow me to introduce you to the hair experts who will walk us through the rest.

The 9 Best Hair Wavers For Effortless-Looking Mermaid Hair, Tested & Reviewed

For a long time, those of us not blessed with naturally beachy hair had two options: attempt to create waves with a flat iron or curling iron or commit to a beach-waves perm. But hair wavers, a relatively new hot tool, has made loose, effortlessly romantic hairstyles possible, even if we’re unskilled at styling and unwilling to make a lasting change.

Instead of crimping irons that have plates with sharp angles, hair wavers have rounded barrels or plates (like the ones on curling irons) that create an S-shaped wave, also known as a “mermaid wave,” explains Valery Joseph, a celebrity hairstylist and the founder of his eponymous salon in New York City. “Hair wavers are great to have in your at-home styling kit since they’re easy-to-use tools that can quickly style strands with little room for error,” he says. “Since the waves created by these tools are more on the loose and beachy side, they don’t require much precision or practice.” Many versions of these hot tools exist, so we tested them and found the best hair wavers worthy of your investment.

Why We Love It: This hot tool was lightweight and incredibly easy to use. With a simple design similar to that of a flat iron, it gave us cascading strands without the fuss of a clamp or multiple barrels. We especially love the design because it made it very hard to burn ourselves—only the plates heat up—and never created creases in our hair. The longer the hot tool clamped our strands, the tighter the waves it created. Quick passes through the waver gave us looser waves. For the price and usability alone, you can’t beat this tool. Who It's For: This hair waver is for someone who’s new to the concept of hair wavers—or hot tools in general—and is wary of a multi-barrel styler. Simply plug it in, allow it to heat up, and clamp the tool over your hair to create waves. It’s also perfect for someone who just wants to tidy up naturally curly or wavy hair. As you experiment with this tool, we recommend leaving your texture as is and using it solely on the top layer of your hair for a polished finish. Barrel Size: Not listed | Heating Settings: 5 temperature options up to 430 degrees

Why We Love It: This waver’s design features a broad clamp that completely prevented any creasing in our hair and heated up quickly to add a beachy texture across our entire head in just 30 minutes. It was straightforward to use with a sleek, vibrant design that was easy to hold. And of course, there’s the price. Few heat stylers are this budget-friendly.

Who It's For: If your hair holds texture easily, you’ll love this styler. We found that our stubborn strands sagged a few hours later, but it’s possible that a heavy-duty hair spray would’ve prevented this effect. Regardless, we didn’t mind much—the tool’s affordability, design, and features (including a long swivel cord and a heat-resistant glove) impressed us.

Barrel Size: Not listed | Heating Settings: Customizable temperature control up to 410 degrees

Why We Love It: This hair waver heats up to significant temperature ranges to accommodate a variety of textures, from fine and thin to thick and coarse. While many wavers can feel heavy in your hand, this one was surprisingly lightweight and comfortable to wield. It created quick, sleek waves without needing multiple passes over the same sections, and it didn’t leave obvious creases in our strands. We also appreciate the design of the buttons on the handle. At no point did we accidentally adjust the temperature or turn off the device while styling (a common gripe of ours while using other hot tools).

Who It's For: This comfortable-to-hold device is ideal for someone who wants classic waves, regardless of their hair texture, and is new to using hot tools. Its straightforward design works well, with a clamp that doesn’t snag strands. The low end of this waver’s temperature range also makes it a nice option for those with fine, damaged hair that want some texture.

Barrel Size: 0.7 inches | Heating Settings: Customizable temperature control up to 390 degrees

Why We Love It: We generally find that the larger our waves get, the less likely they are to hold, but this jumbo styler gave us loose, beachy waves that stayed intact well into the next day without any touch-up sessions. The tool is also well-constructed. The clamp didn’t create any harsh creases or snag our hair, and the device features a little kickstand that allowed us to set down the styler in between sections without scorching our bathroom countertops. As an added bonus, it also comes with a heat-resistant glove for even easier styling.

Who It's For: This hair waver is for someone who’s experienced using hot tools and wants large, loose, and long-lasting waves in their hair. The barrels’ large size makes this device a little more challenging to use, especially on the back of the head. Also, the clamp is very wide and may be a bit tough to open and close if you have small hands.

Barrel Size: 1.25 inches | Heating Settings: Customizable temperature control up to 390 degrees

Why We Love It: This styler’s smaller barrel size (0.75 inches) was perfect for our naturally straight hair. It gave us tight waves that lasted a long time and added significant volume to our fine strands for a plush, romantic look. The tool’s settings are very easy to navigate, and the device reached our desired temperature in under a minute. The clamp offered the perfect amount of tension, never creating harsh lines or creases in our strands. Also, the compact styler fit really nicely in our gym bag, which was an added bonus.

Who It's For: This styler is best for someone with straight strands who wants tight waves that hold (and those with straight hair know how challenging it can be to find an effective hot tool!). It’s also great for people who travel regularly, as it’s smaller (5.5 inches long, to be exact) than most other hair wavers we tried.

Barrel Size: 0.75 inches | Heating Settings: Customizable temperature control up to 430 degrees

Why We Love It: Despite its large size, this jumbo styler was easy to manipulate through our hair. It features a clamp that never snagged or left creases on our strands. It also opened and shut without
