Stylists Share 5 Flirty Hairstyles That Can Bring Life & Volume Back To 'Flat' Hair Over 50

After the scorching days of summer come to an end, fall really is the perfect time to revamp your hairstyle and try out a bouncy, voluminous and flattering new look. We chatted with celebrity and professional hairstylists who shared five chic age-defying haircuts that celebs over 50 absolutely adore. These ‘dos are not only loaded with volume and face-framing layers to prevent “flat” hair, but they’re also versatile enough to work with a variety of hair textures.

Read on for tips, suggestions and insight from Ghanima Abdullah, hair expert and cosmetologist at The Right Hairstyles, Lauren Udoh, hair stylist and hair creative director of WigReports and Krysta Guerrero, owner and stylist at Base Salon Chicago.

5 Chic Volumizing Haircuts To Try This Fall For Women Over 50 1. 'Mob' Cut with Deep Side Part

You're probably already familiar with the classic 'bob' and its longer cousin the 'lob,' so the 'mob' refers to a 'medium bob,' Udoh explains.

She deems it to be a "sleek and stylish choice for many occasions." It's a versatile cut, she adds, that looks "great on almost any face shape and hair type." (See here on Cate Blanchett).

While traditional bobs often end at the chin and lobs fall at the collarbone, the 'mob' ends in the middle of the neck. "The mob cut can be adjusted to complement your features and create an attractive silhouette," Udoh adds.

This not-too-long and also not-too-short cut provides "volume at the crown, with textured layers that frame the face nicely while still maintaining an easy-to-manage style," she points out!

2. Layered Lob with Curtain Bangs

With age, many of us start to notice hair thinning or loss at the crown area. Abdullah notes that curtain bangs can make a sleek and stylish remedy while also boosting volume. She recommends cutting your bangs at your eyebrow level "to emphasize your eyes."

This, paired with face-framing layering in your collarbone-length lob can provide a much more flattering look overall, she notes. Chic curtain bangs "flatter just about any face at any age and neatly frame the face while drawing attention away from serious aging signs," she continues.

Curtain bangs, Abdullah notes, are a type of fringe cut that creates a soft, natural looking wave at the top of the head, as seen here on Kerry Washington. "They are often used to frame the face and specifically, to give it a youthful appearance," she adds, which "look great on mature women" as they make your face appear "smaller and slimmer when they come down to cheek level."

3. 'Bixie'

If you can't decide between a bob or pixie, we have good news. You don't have to! A 'bixie' (or bob-meets-pixie) like Jane Fonda's is very in for fall, and can be a very flattering and chic choice, Guerrero explains.

There are elements of both styles to play with here in this social media-fave cut, and the beginning of a new season is a great time to find what works for you. "The bixie is a traditional bob haircut that’s combined with a pixie," she says.

"The nice thing about a bixie is its versatility — not only can you adjust the length and opt to have it a little longer, but there is no one way to do it when it comes to the style. The cut is totally customizable based on your preference."

4. Pixie with Sideswept Bangs

One specific short 'do that can highlight your eyes, cheekbones, and face shape over 50 is a pixie cut with sideswept bangs. "Ever seen a pixie cut where the bangs steal all the attention? This is what you're after: long, side-swept bangs," Abdullah explains.

Robin Wright's look above is a great example. "The rest of your hair should be piece-y and angled.

She adds that "the cut should swirl around your head to hide hair loss." Abdullah stresses that a pixie cut with layers still maintains volume that is both gorgeous and easy to manage.

5. Voluminous Italian Bob

If you're looking for a haircut that can make your best features pop while giving your mane an extra boost of volume and bounce, look no further than the Italian bob cut.

This style is inspired by Old Hollywood and is a 'do that stylish stars like Salma Hayek opt for. The Italian bob takes the traditional bob cut to new heights with chunky blunt ends that create an airy, voluminous look that's never heavy or bulky. It also has just the right amount of length to allow for easy styling options as it's long enough to tie up, but short enough to be worn as is. Udoh says that a medium bob like this is "a sleek and stylish choice for many occasions."

She adds that "it's a versatile cut that looks great on almost any face shape and hair type." The length can be "adjusted to complement your features and create an attractive silhouette," she notes.

"This ever-popular bob provides volume at the crown, with textured layers that frame the face nicely while still maintaining an easy-to-manage style," Udoh explains.

The Bottom Line

In the quest for voluminous locks, there are countless styling options to explore. However, the aforementioned five have garnered considerable buzz and are expected to maintain their popularity for some time. When considering a hairstyle makeover for the fall, it is vital to factor in your facial contours, hair texture, and desired level of volume before selecting a particular cut.

By collaborating with your stylist and providing visual aids such as pics of your preferred style, you can help get a fuller, more youthful and boosted look, as advised by our specialists!

Balayage Vs. Highlights: Which Hair Color Technique Is Right For You?

Because of how they’re applied, the results vary, too: “Balayage is relatively low maintenance while highlights require much more maintenance and upkeep, as regrowth at the roots can be more noticeable, requiring more frequent touch-ups,” Kusero explains, adding that balayage tends to look “soft, blended, and more subtle with a gradual lightening effect” while highlights are “more structured and defined, with distinct lighter sections that start from the roots.”

There are also variations in how each style grows out: “Balayage has a more graceful grow out as it lives in a vertical spaces versus highlights which grows out horizontally,” says Kim, who notes that because of this, balayage is generally ideal for someone looking for a lived-in, low-maintenance look, whereas highlights might be more suited for clients who want more pronounced lightness.

When it comes to choosing which technique to pursue, Lorena M. Valdes, a colorist at Chicago’s Maxine Salon, suggests considering your hair goals as well as your hair’s texture and density. “If your density gets thinner towards the ends it may be a candidate for balayage or a combination, since highlights can result in a brighter overall look quicker but may need a few sessions to get the ends fully saturated,” she explains.

On the other hand, Valerie’s choice between the two typically depends on the level of lightness and the desired final look. Just remember, that the lighter you go will require more upkeep—and can potentially be more damaging on hair, so Kim thinks that the best way to decide is to think about how much maintenance you want to commit to, the overall look you’re going for, and your existing color history. (This is especially important if you box dye your hair.)

“If you want something that grows out more naturally and requires fewer touch-ups, balayage is ideal, but if you prefer a brighter, more uniform color, or if you like a noticeable change between your base color and the lighter pieces, highlights are a great choice,” Kim says, adding that sometimes a combination of both works really well, especially if you want dimension but with pops of brightness.

The best candidates for balayage

“Balayage works well for almost all hair types, but it’s especially great for those with medium to long hair, as the technique really shines when there’s length to work with,” says Kim. “It’s also ideal for people who want low-maintenance color since the softer transitions in balayage mean you don’t need to touch up as often as with traditional highlights. It’s perfect for someone looking for a natural, sun-kissed effect.”

The best candidates for highlights

“Highlights are fantastic for anyone looking to add dimension and brightness to their hair. This technique works well on all hair types, but it’s especially beneficial for those with shorter hair or those who prefer a more structured, uniform lightness throughout,” says Kim.

“If you like your color to be noticeable, or if you’re aiming for a high-contrast look, highlights are a great option. It’s also a great option if someone has previous all over (dark) color as the foils will help to break through some of the built-up color better in some cases than with balayage (depends on the overall desired result).”

Experts universally advise consulting with a hair care professional. “To determine which technique is most flattering, it’s essential to have a detailed consultation with your colorist,” Valerie asserts. “They can help assess what aligns with your goals and is best suited for your lifestyle and maintenance commitment.”

Maintaining balayage and highlights

While the application techniques may differ, balayage and highlights maintenance is pretty much the same. “For any lightening service, proper home care is crucial to maintaining your color and protecting your investment,” says Valerie, whose color care products of choice include R+Co Sunset Blvd Daily Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner and Gemstone Color Shampoo and Conditioner.

Makeup Tips To Outfit Recommendations: Your Ultimate Guide For The Perfect Haldi Look

With the wedding season in full swing, the hunt for the perfect outfits has already begun. We're all looking for comfortable, hassle-free, glamorous, and, of course, Instagram-worthy looks.

I believe, one of the most challenging parts of wedding shopping is finalising your Haldi look – from hair and makeup to an outfit that is light and airy and accessories that will help you stand out.

Haldi is an important part of the Indian wedding, it’s a day-time event where the bride and groom are smeared with turmeric paste and this is considered a blessing to the couple before the wedding.

Your Haldi look needs to be the most thought-of because it’s a messy affair— with all the turmeric, water, and flower showers, your outfit and makeup should not only be beautiful but practical—something that stays intact while you enjoy the festivities. Think of breathable fabrics, easy silhouettes, and statement accessories.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you nail your Haldi look, from skincare prep and makeup suggestions to hairstyle inspiration and outfit recommendations.

1. Skincare tips & tricks for haldi

Haldi is said to leave a stain on your skin so it’s recommended to prep your skin well to avoid mishaps before the big day. Here are a few steps you should consider to prep your skin before Haldi:

Step 1: Cleanse your skin

When it comes to getting glowing skin for a special day, choosing the right cleanser is the key.

Choose a cleanser that’s gentle and suits your skin type to avoid mishaps before the big day.

It is recommended to double-cleanse your skin to remove all the makeup, dust and dirt.

Always remember to apply some coconut oil in your scalp before the function as it will help with the staining process.

Go for a lightweight facial oil or serum on the morning of your Haldi to keep your skin glowing and hydrated.
